Combines environmental education with our national heritage.
Touches of greenery and history have been added to local schools throughout the Two Rivers area, funded by a grant from Georgia Power, in an educational effort called “The Famous and Historic Tree Program.” Founded by the American Forest Society, the program offers seedlings derived from the homes of historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Students throughout the fourteen county area have taken advantage of this environmental educational opportunity while learning about our nation’s history in the process. These students are now caring for Famous and Historic Trees such as the Trail of Tears Rosebud, the Manassas Mimosa and the Juliette Gordon Low Magnolia. Included in the program are framed certificates detailing each tree’s significance, planting guides, lesson plans and audiovisuals. More than 7,000 students have participated in this environmental and American Heritage experience.
